Annexes C of the ENV 1991-2.2 and of the ENV 1993-1.2 contain a method aimed at estimating the heating of external bare steel sections. This takes into consideration a steady state approach, so its application is restricted to thermally thin section. For example, the heating of composite or protected sections is impossible to calculate directly by using this method. The aims of the present research are to improve and to extend the existing physical models, in order to calculate temperature development within various types of structural elements, by including transient state effects. The verification of the current Eurocode models has been performed on the basis of experimental and numerical results. An evolution was then suggested in order to use these models in transient conditions, with some required modifications. A benchmark study has led to some propositions for the improvement of the current method, especially concerning the effect of some important parameters such as wind, multiple openings configuration and balconies. Some alternatives have been investigated to deal with the temporal aspect of the problem. In parallel, new heat transfer models have been developed for the calculation of the temperature reached by various elements, such as composite, protected steel and encased steel sections. Some experimental work has been performed concerning the heating of element protected by casing (VTT), the heating of composite column (TNO) and the effect of wind as well as the heating of steel protected by intumescent coating (CTICM). Finally, a global approach for estimating thermal heat flux to external structures and the resulting heating in transient conditions has been developed. An example of its use is given in the present report.
