Extended process and plant monitoring is obviously needed to obtain a stable and constant continuous casting process. Information about signal behaviour has to be gathered and processed to give, at any time, information on the processing condition. In this project, existing monitoring facilities were extended and new ones developed by means of new and innovative signal processing techniques. Control strategies for mould level control and others which are connected closely with efficient monitoring were improved by application of modern control techniques. Additionally, the analysis of monitoring results and their quality relation were implemented into a decision support system, which provided plant operators with the necessary information for process management. The abovementioned tasks were carried out on specific casting problems including mould level fluctuations and mould thermal behaviour.
