Investigation of the influence of the pre-hydroforming processes and development of characterization methods for the testing of steel semi-products for hydroforming - HYDROTEST
A guide line for tubes testing for hydroforming has been elaborated based on the idea that it is impossible to choose a unique test because there is a lot of factors that need to be taken into account in order to know how a semiproduct is going to behave during hydroforming. So the guide line will assist the process of deciding the appropriate tests by means of three different scenarios or variants created based on availability, cost, testing time, quality of results and initial investment: - Variant A provides the most suitable tests for a low cost and low investment alternative. These can be considered as basic or essential tests - Variant B provides useful tests if there is real need and funding available - Variant C provides tests for the most complete investigation. Concerning FEM simulation the main conclusion obtained is that, although there is a lot of possibilities to increase the quality of the simulation (thickness distribution is a very interesting one), the ratio between accuracy increment versus CPU time or test effort/cost to feed the model is not high enough to justify the effort needed. This conclusion has been validated with the simulation of a real industrial prototype. There could be some special cases in which these improvements can provide useful information. One example is the welding line, whose simulation, including its mechanical characteristics and mainly its dimensions (thickness), seems to be very important for cases where it is difficult to find a safe position during hydroforming.
