Abstract

A report focusing mainly on psychological aspects of balancing work and family life, based on young families in Austria, Belgium, Finland, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Portugal and Switzerland, with children and two incomes. The main pattern is quite similar across nations and gender - but there are also some important differences. Cultural values such as a less egalitarian gender attitude and a higher degree of conservatism seem to make it more difficult to reconcile work and family demands.
The report gives recommendations for families and individuals, as well as organizations and political decision-makers, on how to better meet these challenges.
