Introducing hydrogen as an energy carrier - Safety, regulatory and public acceptance issues : results from EU research framework programmes

Funded under: FP6-SUSTDEV

The purpose of this publication is to inform the community about current initiatives within the European research framework which are aimed at ensuring that safety issues and regulatory input for approval of hydrogen-based technology systems are rigorously examined and that fundamental societal issues related to public perception of hydrogen as a fuel are also being carefully considered. The brochure reports on important results of research activities funded under the Thematic Programme Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development (Fifth RTD Framework Programme, 1999-2002) and under the Thematic Area Sustainable Development, Global Change and Ecosystems (Sixth RTD Framework Programme, 2002-2006). In addition, the main elements EU strategy towards the realisation of the hydrogen economy with respect to societal, regulatory and safety issues are introduced, in particular the main action points of the European Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Platform, as well as important aspects of international co-operation in this field.
