Certification of thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity up to 1025 K of a glass-ceramic reference material BCR-724Funded under: FP7-JRC
This certification report is largely based on the final report of a research project, funded by the European Community under the �Competitive and Sustainable Growth� program (�HTCRM - High Temperature Certified Reference Material�, contract SMT4-CT98-2211 1). The project intended to produce a reference material with certified thermal conductivity (lambda) and diffusivity (alpha). Samples in the shape of cylinders with different diameter and thickness were prepared from large blocks of Pyroceram 9606. The material was tested for homogeneity. Homogeneity was found sufficient for the intended use, and the corresponding uncertainty contribution was determined. Dispatch and storage conditions were judged non-critical for this glass-ceramic material. However, stability of the samples under repeated heating cycles to elevated temperatures needed to be investigated. An uncertainty contribution was determined based on a limited use of the CRM of 10 times heating up to 1025 K. The certified values were determined through an interlaboratory exercise. Thermal diffusivity was determined using laser-flash and Xenon lamp methods. Thermal conductivity was measured using guarded hot plate apparatus and hot-wire/hot-strip methods.
