An atlas of Pan-European data for investigating the fate of agrochemicals in terrestrial ecosystems

Abstract

A harmonised database was build with the specific objective of implementing a tired modeling approach to study the fate of agrochemicals in terrestrial ecosystems (FATE project) in response to European environmental legislation (e.g. Water Framework Directive, Nitrate Directive and Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive). THE scale and type of data collected and created within the database were dictated by the requirements of the models. The database includes readily available information concerning environmental characteristics (e.g. soils, meteorology, elevation and rivers) and data created specifically for the FATE project of specialised anthropogenic and background pressures (e.g. mineral/manure nitrogen and phosphorus application). The pan-European maps of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer, manure and point sources provide a first estimation of agro-chemical pressures at the European scale.
