The Doltrac project concentrates on the development of lightweight high-strength stainless steel sandwich panels to be used in floor sections of train wagons and metro cars. The project shows that high-strength stainless steels can be competitive with aluminium when used for lightweight constructions. Compared to aluminium, an important advantage is the high energy absorption of stainless steels in crashes. Production techniques such as forming and joining to manufacture high-strength stainless steel sandwich panels are described in this final report, as well as the fabrication of prototypes of these sandwich panels. Mechanical tests like bending, tensile, fatigue and crash tests for stainless steel sandwich structures have been carried out as part of this project. Corrosion tests were carried out to obtain information about the strength and corrosion resistance of the sandwich panels developed. The project has generated information and guidelines for the design, joining, forming and manufacturing of three newly developed high-strength stainless steel sandwich panels. Not investigated, but to be expected as a spin-off of this project, is that the sandwich panels developed can also be used for other parts of trains and metro cars (side wall and roof sections, etc.). Partners involved in the Doltrac project were Outokumpu Stainless Oy Finland, Acerinox S. A. Spain, OCAS (Arcelor Group) Belgium, VTT Industrial Systems Finland and TNO Netherlands. Two affiliated partners were also involved, making a highly appreciated contribution to the project. These affiliated partners were Siemens Transportation Systems of Austria and Berkenhoff/Bedra of Germany
