Mid-term assessment - Science and society activities, 2002-2006

Funded under: FP6-SOCIETY

At the crossroad where FP6 was about to reach its end of term and the preparations for FP7 were under way, the services of the DG RTD launched a mid-term evaluation to assess whether the activities implemented under the "Science and Society" part in FP6 met their objectives and to develop recommendations for FP7. The report was built on the review of selected S&S activities for the five thematic areas of the programme (science education, scientific advice and governance, ethics, women and science, science communication) and their integration with findings of other evaluations and a number of major conferences and forums. All the funded activities were found to be in line with the objectives of the Commission's Science and Society Action Plan as defined in 2001. In particular, the report acknowledges that the programme established a very visible European dimension for S&S themes by supporting and catalysing cooperation in Europe through activities on important issues of crucial value to the Lisbon agenda. It also highlights a significant unrealised potential to influence policy development and puts forward a set of recommendations to the Commission and the national authorities of the Member States.
