Quality of the working environment and productivity

Funded under: FP6-LIFESCIHEALTH

Abstract

The economic approach to health and safety at company level cannot replace the value of the human requirements. Health and safety is part of the social and ethical role of a company. A company policy cannot only be based on economic parameters. It is difficult or even impossible to evaluate qualitative costs such as suffering, reduction in the quality of life, family problems, decrease of lifespan, and so on, in monetary terms.
A contribution to the discussions of work-related accidents and illnesses and the related economic and social costs, this working paper describes how a good working environment can increase productivity. The working paper is based on research findings as well as 16 interesting case studies from different countries, followed by an analysis and conclusions.
