Getting the most out of our biological resources, A guide to the European Knowledge-Based Bio-Economy

Funded under: FP7-KBBE

Entering the 21st century, the EU must respond to a number of signifi cant challenges, including: an ageing population; increased demand for highquality food and sustainable food production; growing incidence of food-related disorders; spread of animal diseases; limited resources of raw materials and energy; and the threat of global warming.
It is therefore critical that Europe develops and uses knowledge to sustainably utilise its bio-resources. In 2000, the European Council in Lisbon agreed upon an ambitious goal: to become the world's most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy. The Knowledge-Based Bio-Economy (KBBE) is part of the Lisbon Strategy.
