Euro-Build in steel - Evaluation of client demand, sustainability and future regulations on the next generation of building design in steel
Steel construction has achieved a relatively high market share in some European countries, but this is not the case in all countries or all sectors. For example, even in industrial buildings, the market share for steel ranges from 30 % to 90 % in the various EU countries. Furthermore, in the residential building sector, the market share for steel is low and therefore market stimulation should lead to increased opportunity for steel-intensive design across Europe. There are many client acceptance, economic, regulatory and environmental factors which influence the demand for steel and which must be properly addressed if the market share for steel is to be maximised in all sectors in all countries. These factors will have a significant effect on the next generation of building design. In this research, a forward look has been taken of the factors which may influence the use of steel in three sectors: commercial buildings, industrial buildings, housing and residential buildings. The factors, which have the strongest influence, are: client demand and changing social and economic conditions, sustainability and environmental issues, national and European regulatory framework. The main activities of the project are: identifying trends and 'drivers' in the three sectors, a market evaluation of the opportunities for steel construction, development and promotion of steel-intensive building concepts to meet the new demands.
