Snow monitoring in Alagna Valsesia Activity report: 11th - 16th January 2008Funded under: FP7-JRC
A radar system called "LISA" has been installed in Alagna Valsesia (Monte Rosa) in March 2006 as part of the collaboration between the JRC, the Monterosa 2000 S.p.A. and the University of Turin, aiming to check the possibilities to be used in support to decisions about the safety of the ski area. Such instrument is very important for people involved in ski areas management and may help them to decide when and where artificially trigger avalanches to "clean" dangerous areas or, eventually, close them to the skiers. The LISA system is a perfect candidate to get this results, because of its features, such as monitoring 24 hours a day in almost every weather conditions and providing data about the snow coverage, detecting every small change occurred in its surface.
