The objective of this project is to study the effects of different steelmaking process parameters on steel castability and cleanliness. These process parameters concern:
- The deoxidation procedure: The main deoxidisers concerned are Al, Si and Mn. The effects of trace elements (such as Mg in Al) contents, addition schedule and deoxidiser amount are studied;
- The slag practice: This includes parameters such as slag composition, weight and moment of addition as well as the impact of the slag tapped from BOF or EAF, entrapment of inclusions in slag, etc.
The benefits of some recommended practices and slag compositions are assessed on castability (SEN clogging) and final steel cleanliness. According to the kind of parameters tested, two parts are distinguished in the project: development of optimised deoxidation practices and development of optimised slag practices. They have both been studied through numerical simulations, laboratory experiments and pilot or plant trials. We have distinguished numerical simulations whose aim was to model more or less completely a metallurgical phenomenon from less 'ambitious' models that have been developed mainly to understand and exploit directly experimental results. The numerical simulations are presented in specific chapters, whereas the second type of modelling is presented together with the corresponding results of experiments. For the sake of clarity and because the same tools have often been used to study both aspects of the project, the results are then summarised by grouping the main results according to these three approaches.
