Achievements in software and grid technologies

Funded under: FP6-IST

This section describes some of the main achievements of the research on Software Technologies performed during FP6. It presents descriptions to exemplify and illustrate major results and on-going technology development.
Software, systems and services are at the heart of the knowledge economy and society. They form the basis of a global industry and are a major source of innovation and growth. The packaged soft ware market alone is worth some EUR 74 billion per year in the EU. In addition to the soft ware vendor industry itself, these technologies underpin the development of systems, products and services in many other industrial sectors. A competitive European soft ware and service industry will be a key to achieving the EU's Lisbon goals of greater competitiveness, sustainability and inclusion.
The increasing mobility and connectivity offered by myriads of pervasive and ambient computing devices, together with the availability of wireless communication channels, are fuelling soft ware and services with new possibilities that will have an active role in transforming Europe into a more dynamic and competitive knowledge-based economy.
This growing reliance on soft ware has created new challenges in soft ware development. Not only is more soft ware needed than ever before, but the requirements are very exacting: interoperability, reliability, security, accessibility and customisation are all key considerations. Hence, the demands placed on the soft ware engineering community - to quickly develop new products with flexibility, robustness and quality - have also increased.
