Abstract

Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) fosters frontier research that will open up new avenues across the full breadth of future information technologies. FET acts as a pathfinder and has the agility to react to new ideas and opportunities as they arise from within science or society. It promotes the exploration of radically new ideas and trends for future research and innovation and provides sustained support to emerging areas that require long-term fundamental research. In this spirit, FET can be considered as the home for 'transformative research' that through its initiatives and actions can initiate areas that lead to a range of exceptional and unprecedented outcomes. In particular, FET can re-think or revolutionise entire disciplines, shape new ones or disrupt established technologies, practices or theories. FET operates two complementary schemes that together aim at the nurture of new and emerging foundational trends in future information technologies. The bottom-up and deadline-free FET Open scheme can pick-up new ideas and opportunities whenever they arise. FET Proactive nurtures new ideas in selected promising domains.
