Integrating European research infrastructures - Integrating activities

Funded under: FP7

To be a truly competitive, knowledge-based economy, Europe must get better at producing knowledge through research, at diffusing it through education and at applying it through innovation - Europe's 'knowledge triangle'. This happens when the right framework conditions and infrastructure are in place to put this knowledge to work for Europe. Today, thanks to European Union's Research Infrastructures (RI) programme, that framework exists. RIs are major instruments, installations or facilities providing services which support research and promote knowledge transmission, exchange and preservation. They cover major scientific equipment or set of instruments; knowledge basedresources such as collections, archives or structured scientific information; as well as enabling ICT-based infrastructures such as GRID, computing, software and communications. They can be single-sited, distributed or virtual (the service being provided electronically). They support most scientific fields, from astronomy and physics to environmental sciences, genomics and social sciences.
