Report on authentication in fisheries monitoring - Possible benefits of the Galileo GNSS system for the Vessel Monitoring System and fisheries control

Funded under: FP7-ICT

Abstract

This document explores the possible benefits through Galileo for the VMS (Vessel Monitoring System) for fisheries control and what we expect to achieve through the Maruse (a GJU project) demonstrations. Maritime applications and particular open sea fisheries are characterized by large areas and expensive satellite-based communication facilities. Galileo is expected to contribute towards higher quality open sea positioning information, more reliable services and therefore more safety and better enforcement capabilities. The subject of this analysis is the use of Galileo for VMS systems used by fisheries monitoring and control (FMC) organizations.
