This publication provides information on the design, installation, running-in phase and testing of a demonstration/pilot plant for a new mechanical joining technology as well as the testing of steel and compound sections produced on the plant. In a first step all elements of the production line were integrated and interaction was optimised. Some thousand meters of sections were produced and the mechanical properties of the joining zone have been documented by head wise - pulling and shear tests. Grooving and web forming tools were slightly developed and led to a good performance in the production plant. An online testing method has been implemented in the pilot equipment. The results of the implemented online testing systems show good performance concerning documentation of geometrical parameters of the material during production. Further details are to be clarified regarding the control of the web shaping and the joining groove. Different types of profiles have been developed, produced and tested. One result is the technical approval for buildings which was the result of optimised joining strength and reproducibility. Special sections from different materials such as high-strength steel grades, stainless steel and compound sections were produced and tested under static and dynamic load. The results from these tests showed that the joining technology provides new aspects in design for lightweight construction even under dynamic load. Additionally, bending tests with comparison to other sections were performed and showed good results as well as corrosion tests for mild steel and stainless steel sections and fire testing. For further development of the joining technology a basis for FEM modelling was built up to be able to predict joining strength as well as optimisation of the tools.
