Childhood and adolescent cancer research - EU funding: 2002-2009Funded under: FP7-HEALTH
Each year 15 000 children and adolescents in Europe are diagnosed with cancer. Although progress in the treatment of childhood cancers over the last 50 years has been enormous, around 25 % of all patients still die of this disease. Therefore more research is needed to prevent cancer, to improve therapies and to reduce their side-effects. This booklet gives a short overview of the research projects focusing on child and adolescent cancers funded by the European Union in the years 2004-2009 through EU Framework Programmes for Research and Technological Development - the EU's main instruments for funding research in Europe. Under the Sixth Framework Programme (2002-2006) and the Seventh Framework Programme (2007-2013) twenty-two projects were supported with a total budget of € 100 million, of which nearly €20 million in FP7.
