Social and psychological factors in conflict and its resolution: the mid-eastern and European experience. Proceedings of a Dialogue Workshop, Brussels, June 7- 8, 2002

Funded under: FP6-CITIZENS

Abstract

These conference proceedings represent a singular attempt by researchers working worldwide and in various fields to understand the social and psychological factors in conflict and its resolution. The resulting product is unique, firstly, because the discussions contained herein are of a comparative and multidisciplinary nature. While the central topic of the conference is the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, this topic is illuminated by the mutual observations, the overlapping points of agreement, and the shared questions of researchers working from different perspectives on various conflicts, including those in the Balkans, Northern Ireland, and Cyprus.

The publication is divided into four sections. The first section examines the major psychological and emotional forces relevant to reconciliation. The second section explores methods of overcoming these emotional challenges through regional cooperation and confidence building measures. The third section focuses on peace education, both in school systems and in societies at large. The summary session represents an attempt to capture the essential themes and lessons of the preceding sessions, and to draw relevant implications for future action.

The workshop was organised by The University Institute for Diplomacy and Regional Cooperation, founded by the Peres Center for Peace and Tel Aviv University, and by the Issam Sartawi Center for Peace Studies at Al-Quds University.

The proceedings are published in printed form as EUR 20640 (ISBN: 92-894-5271-4), which is available free of charge from the Documentation Service of the European Commission's DG Research.
