Key action - improving the socio-economic knowledge base: Synopses of key action projects funded as a result of the third call for proposals 2002

The scope of earlier socio-economic research is both deepened and widened through the implementation of the Key Action "Improving the Socio-economic Knowledge base" in the 5th RTD Framework Programme (1998-2002). The objective of this key action is to improve our understanding of the structural changes taking place in European society in order to identify ways of managing change and to involve European citizens more actively in shaping their own futures. This involves the analysis of the main trends giving rise to these changes, the analysis of the relationships between technology, employment and society, the reappraisal of participation mechanisms for collective action at all levels of governance and the elaboration of new development strategies fostering growth employment and economic and social cohesion.

The third call for proposals was open from July 2001 till December 2002 and addressed five themes. 434 proposals were received in response to the third call. This number includes 372 research projects and thematic networks, and 62 accompanying measures. 89 proposals were selected for EU funding. The present publication presents the synopses of the selected projects within the different themes. (Synopses of projects funded through the 1st and 2nd calls) are also available in the Document Library.
