Abstract

This publication is based on work financed by the European Commission, Directorate General Research under the Targeted Socio-Economic strand of Framework 4 and the Key Action in Framework 5: ¿Improving Human Research Potential and the Socio-Economic Knowledge Base¿.

In response to issues raised at an earlier workshop, DG Research decided to fund two events, one on quantitative methods and one on qualitative methods. The aim of the qualitative methods workshop was to provide cross-national researchers with a forum to discuss methodological issues that have arisen and do arise in their daily work. Specifically, it aimed to confront researchers with three questions: how can researchers ¿get inside the skin¿ of their field in another country?; how can researchers sensitively ¿view from the outside¿?; and how can cross-national research be both reflective of national context and complexities and yet still be comparative? The structure of the workshop was designed to offer a mix of expert led sessions, discussing different methods and methodological issues, and task-based sessions for all participants to debate cross-national dimensions of conceptual and analytic issues. This publication summarises the recommendations and main conclusions of the workshop and is published as EUR 20737.
