Gender in research: Gender impact assessment of the specific programmes of the Fifth Framework Programme: Improving human research potential and the socio-economic knowledge base. Executive summary

Funded under: FP5-HUMAN POTENTIAL

Abstract

This study is part of a series of eight studies aimed at assessing the gender impact in the specific programmes of the Fifth Framework Programme of the European Community for Research, Technological Development, and Demonstration Activities (1998-2002), in order to formulate recommendations for a better integration of the gender dimension in future research activities and programmes.

The objective of the study is to provide a gender impact assessment of the specific programme "Improving human research potential and the socio-economic knowledge base" of FP5 in order to formulate recommendations for a better integration of the gender dimension in future research activities and programmes.

The study assesses, and makes recommendations on, three principal dimensions of the IHP specific programme:
- the participation of women and men in programme and project activities;
- the mainstreaming of gender in the management of the programme and project cycles, in particular in the setting of priorities, in guidance to project proposers, in project evaluation and selection, and in programme monitoring;
- the impact of the programme in terms of the treatment of gender issues in the research activities financed and on improved understanding of the gender issue itself.
