How R&D can impact policy making: Thirteen IST project examples

Funded under: FP5-IST

This report surveys the work of thirteen research projects that contribute directly to policy development. They were launched in the area of New Methods of Work and Electronic Commerce (Key Action II) of the Information Society Technologies (IST) programme between 1999 and 2002.

The report provides a synthesis of first results and therefore aims to underline the importance of work undertaken at the borderline between research and policy-making. The projects address issues such as: how e-work impacts family life, how job mobility develops on a global scale, what the environmental and social sustainability contribution of the e-economy could be, how ICTs impact economic growth, what are potential legal implications of ecommerce, how SMEs can benefit from participating in the e-economy, how to make information infrastructures secure and reliable and what the role of ICTs might be for the development of regions.
