Representations of Europe and the nation in current and prospective member-states: media, elites and civil society
Project ID: HPSE-CT-2001-00044Funded under: FP5-HUMAN POTENTIAL
The EURONAT project studies the relationship (intertwined or mutually exclusive) between national identity and representations of Europe and the EU in nine countries: Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom. In this first set of project reports, the researchers outline the historical legacies and relational contexts in which national identity and relations with the EU and Europe have developed in the countries studied. The report provides an historical, geopolitical and theoretical background against which to analyse (in subsequent phases of the project), the representations and meanings of the nation, Europe and the EU and their interrelations in media, elite and lay people discourses.
