Abstract

In the context of the Sixth Framework Programme, the EC is developing a broader vision on e-Infrastructure. One of the main goals is to create on top of the pan- European network for research GÉANT, another pan-European infrastructure which is based on Grids-architectures. While GÉANTs main objective is connectivity, the Grids infrastructure will focus on processing of information.

This paper, by Kim Veltman, Maastricht McLuhan Institute (MMI), European Centre for Digital Culture, Knowledge Organization and Learning Technology, Maastricht, Netherlands, is a contribution to the publication "Changing the way research is done: The user perspective on eInfrastructure", whose aim is to inform users of the broad range of capabilities and benefits of e-Infrastructures, by surveying their current status and by focusing on concrete examples of their use in a wide variety of fields, as described by experts in these fields.
