Abstract

More detailed and more technical background information is given relating to this topic of the fifth call for proposals under the specific programme for standards, measurements and testing (SMT), 1994-1998. Milk powders subjected to different heat treatments are blended with non-milk proteins (e.g. isolates from soya, maize, wheat and pea) and analyzed using different electrophoretic and ELISA-techniques. According to preliminary results obtained by an IDF experts group, SDS-PAGE may be suitable for application as a screening method. However, it has to be verified that a sufficiently low detection limit (1%) can be obtained. 2D-gel electrophores, capillary zone electrophoresis and ELISA-techniques are to be applied in parallel. The further steps depend on the result of these preliminary experiments. If SDS-PAGE is a suitable screening method, one of the other methods or a combination of these methods has to be selected for further analysis of the samples. The following information is needed :

- 1. Identity of the non-milk protein.
- 2. Quantity of the non-milk protein.

A time scale and expected result format are also described.
