Abstract

Digital technology today allows you to manipulate or interact with content in ways not possible before. The combination of PCs and networks allows the individual to create, edit, transmit, share, aggregate, personalise and interact with multimedia content in increasingly flexible ways. The same technology allows content to be carried across different platforms. There is no longer any reason why telephone networks should be restricted to carrying just voice, or the broadcast TV network just audio-visual content. In the longer term, the transport medium will converge further and may well become irrelevant to users. Furthermore, interactivity with content is evolving and access will be possible to multimedia content from an ever-growing range of devices, including handheld terminals.
