Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

This document provides more detailed and more technical background information relating to this topic of the sixth call for proposals under the specific programme for standards, measurements and testing (SMT), 1994-1998. While existing standards for eye / face protection may test for deterioration or damage to the equipment when exposed to radiant heat, or IR reflectivity, they do not directly assess the degree of protection against radiant heat afforded to the wearer. For this type of equipment, therefore, the Basic Health and Safety Requirements of European Directive 89/686/EEC are not fully addressed. This research aims to develop a single method, or possibly two equivalent methods, to objectively assess this level of protection. Performance criteria can then be established against which equipment, claiming to be for protection against radiant heat, can be tested. A single pass / fail performance level may be all that is required. Alternatively, different levels of protective performance could be specified.
