  • Standards, measurements and testing, 1994-1998. Topic 12: Specifications for welding face-shields with dual filters of various luminous transmittance

This document provides more detailed and more technical background information relating to this topic of the sixth call for proposals under the specific programme for standards, measurements and testing (SMT), 1994-1998. The aim of the project is to evaluate suitability of modern dual shade filters for various welding processes. Therefore, a literature survey on health effects of UV-radiation and blue light is necessary with a survey on recommended exposure limits proposed by various international health and safety agencies, such as International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), and Commission Internationale d`Eclairage (CIE).

At the first stage of the study, the different types of dual filters will be provided by various manufacturers, and the attenuation of the filters against optical radiation (UV, light, IR) will be tested at accredited testing laboratories involved in the project.

Published data on emitted spectra by different welding processes will be collected from available literature, and if not appropriate or reliable, detailed spectroradiometric measurements of optical radiation emissions will be made at work places.

In addition, welders working with various processes will be equipped with conventional and dual shade filters, and their opinions on subjective effects concerning protective and ergonomic aspects of both types will be recorded.

On the basis of the results, the best possible filter combination can be assessed based on biological hazard data and radiation emissions by various processes.
