This document provides more detailed and more technical background information relating to this topic of the sixth call for proposals under the specific programme for standards, measurements and testing (SMT), 1994-1998. The aim of the project is to develop a reference method for the determination of milkfat in mixed fats. If possible, this method should not depend on the availability of component samples (milkfat, non-milk fats), because practical problems (e.g. imported mixed fats) may occur. Furthermore, there is a risk that these samples have been manipulated.

The method will be based on an evaluation of fatty acid or triglyceride data. Advanced techniques (e.g. combination of HPLC and GC, GC with long capillary columns) should be used to obtain an appropriate separation. Samples representative for the composition of milkfats and non-milk fats used in EU have to be analyzed. On the basis of the data obtained, multivariate statistical data analysis should be applied to obtain a reliable analytical procedure.
