The European Commission administers a coal research programme under which financial aid is granted for projects in the fields of mining engineering and coal utilisation. The normal level of funding is 60 % of the estimated eligible costs of the projects selected for support. The Commission has decided to target the 1998 programme on a small number of high-priority topics that can have an impact in terms of improved protection of the environment, improved efficiency to decrease emissions of CO2, and improved competitiveness of coal.
Applications for financial aid are invited for targeted projects in each of the fields listed below. Projects in these fields must be presented and carried out jointly by persons or organisations in at least 2 or, preferably, more of the Union's Member States.

- A. Mining engineering:
. I. Mining infrastructure and management;
. II. Mining operations;

- B. Coal preparation and utilisation:
. I. Coal preparation;
. II. Coal coking and up-grading;

- Coal combustion and gasification:
. Development and improvement of advanced coal power generation technologies;
. Improved methods to characterise the performance of coals for combustion and gasification;
. Improved lifetime and performance of equipment in conventional pulverised coal fired power plants;
. Improved utilisation of coal ashes.
