The energy challenge, of the 21st Century: The role of nuclear energy

Funded under: FP6-EURATOM

Energy is of paramount importance for a modern industrialised economy. Serious breakdowns or interruptions in the supply of power would lead immediately to an almost complete breakdown of public and private life in Western countries. This is a fundamental concern that must properly be taken into account in any prospective scenario.
Substantial economic growth and industrialisation are expected around the world during the 21st century, thus continuing the trend of the 20th century. As a result, average living standards will rise, leading to a strong increase in energy demand, even if the efficiency of energy conversion increases and the potential of energy conservation is exploited.
