ASEM Science and Technology Workshops Vol. 1, Executive Summaries 2001 and 2002 Workshops

ASEM Science and Technology Cooperation was put formally in high gear by the First Meeting in October 1999 in Beijing, China, of the Science and Technology Ministers of the 25 ASEM countries (Austria, Belgium, Brunei, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Korea, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, The Netherlands, The Philippines, Vietnam, United Kingdom) and the European Commission. Key priorities for potential cooperation, including forestry, sustainable development of ecosystems and environmental protection, aquaculture and clean production were incorporated in the Chairman's Statement of the meeting.
In the third biennial ASEM Summit Meeting held in Seoul, Korea on October 19-21, 2000, the initiative for Scientific and Technological Cooperation on Forest Conservation and Sustainable Development was endorsed and additional impetus given to other forms of scientific and technological cooperation. The 'ASEM Scientific & Technological Workshops' Series documents highlights from the process and intends to give visibility to at least some of the many joint activities and workshops undertaken in this contexts upon the initiative of both Asian and European partners.
