Eucomed Position Paper concerning the EC Communication "Science and Technology, the key to Europe's future - Guidelines for future European Union policy to support research"

Funded under: FP7

Abstract

The medical technology industry is characterized by a very high degree of innovation and development of products. However the industry in Europe is still being surpassed by the US and Japan in terms of both overall investment in R&D and in the access of patients to new medical technology. On 4 May, Eucomed published a Position Paper concerning the EC Communication "Science and Technology, the key to Europe's future - Guidelines for future European Union policy to support research"

The purpose of this paper is to:
- Emphasize the critical nature of innovation for the health of citizens, the economy, employment and, indeed, the overall well-being of society in the European Union
- Contribute towards shaping the 7th Framework Programme (FP7) to put a far greater emphasis on health and on innovation related to medical technology as a major contributor to health. The demographic shift towards an increasingly ageing population in Europe is a major concern in all Member States and, in most Member States, healthcare expenditure is one of the major public costs. As citizens get older (largely due to medical progress) so their need for medical intervention and continued medical support increases. In addition, enlargement of the EU is bringing in new Members whose healthcare systems often require considerable investment and upgrading to bring them up to the standards expected by existing EU citizens.
