Abstract

The ERA-NET scheme is a highly innovative component of the European Union's EUR 19.2 billion Sixth Research Framework Programme (2002-2006). Uniquely, it provides support for the transnational networking and coordination of national and regional research programmes. The scheme's participants are, therefore, programme managers working in national ministries and funding agencies, and not universities or enterprises.
ERA-NET is a new scheme designed to support the long-lasting coordination of European research programmes across national boundaries, aimed at the funders and managers of national and regional research programmes. The ERA-NET scheme represents a significant step towards the creation of a fully functioning European Research Area.
