Cancer Research: Projects funded under the Sixth Framework Programme, Project Synopses

Cancer is likely to remain one of most important public health problems in Europe. The multiple causes of cancer and their complex interactions make the disease an elusive enemy and a formidable challenge for basic and clinical researchers alike.
Yet the European Union's strong research community is well placed to advance the understanding and treatment of cancer. Traditional approaches are constantly improving, whilst genomic and immunological research offer prospects for future innovative treatment. In addition, new screening and detection methods are making it possible to confront the disease at an increasingly early stage.
The European Union strongly supports cancer research. The 'Combating Cancer' initiative is part of the EU's Combating Major Diseases research in the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6).
The present catalogue includes 66 projects funded under FP6 within the 'Life sciences, genomics and biotechnology for health' priority. These projects are at the forefront of European collaborative research in basic translational and clinical research, and are currently providing interesting information on the progress made and achievements in cancer research.
