The aim of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) for Health (also known as eHealth) is to improve significantly the quality, access and efficacy of healthcare for all citizens. The European Commission (EC) has been supporting activities in eHealth for almost two decades. Many results from research programmes have been or are being put into practice. The Commission is supporting the beneficial uptake and deployment of ICT solutions in healthcare, through its eHealth Action Plan. eHealth has also been identified as "lead market" in the Aho report. The Commission¿s DG Information Society & Media aims to support this market with activities under the ICT theme of the Seventh Framework Programme for Research (FP7) and the i2010 policy framework "A European Information Society for growth and employment".
DG Information Society and Media will endeavour to support healthcare systems in dealing with the considerable challenges they are facing. The challenges come from multiple directions, including chronic diseases, demographic changes (ageing of the population), nursing shortages and rising costs.
