The comparison of alternative waste management strategies for long-lived radioactive wastes, EUR 21021
Project ID: FIKW-CT-2001-20143Funded under: FP5-EAECTP C
The use of nuclear power to produce electricity, heat or propel nuclear vessels and the use of radioactive isotopes in medicine, research and industry produces radioactive waste. It is the responsibility of each country that produces radioactive waste to ensure that this waste is managed safely to protect the environment and that it does not produce a hazard to either the generation that befitted from its production of future generations. To meet this responsibility, each country has developed a strategy for managing its radioactive waste and a comparison of these strategies is the subject of the present project, COMPAS. In the context of this project, 'strategy' is defined as: series of steps that each country intends to undertake in order to achieve the goal of safely managing the waste. The project is part of the Fifth Framework Programme of the European Commission.
