Health Research in FP7

Funded under: FP7-HEALTH

Research-based small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) play a key role in the economy of the European Union (EU) in terms of growth potential, competitiveness, innovation and employment. Hundreds of research-intensive SMEs are active in health-related R&D, and in recognition of their innovative potential, scientific strength and strategic importance, the EU considers their participation in the EU Framework Programmes a key priority.
Industrial participation is encouraged in the Health Theme, with special attention to research-intensive SMEs.
Participation to FP7 should permit SMEs to expand their R&D activities. SMEs can maximize the value of their expertise, learn from other key players and reduce risk by collaborating with other SMEs, with larger industrial partners and academics from all over Europe and beyond. At the same time, the often pivotal technological input from SMEs, their business orientation and dynamism will benefit the other project participants, optimising the total output from the collaborative projects and the exploitation of the results.
The mobilisation of research-intensive health/biotech SMEs has gained momentum during the previous framework programme, and an even more prominent role is expected for SMEs in FP7.
