Nanomaterials Technologies & Diabetes Workshop, NANODIAB 2007, Highlights from the event

Funded under: FP7-NMP

In recent years, both Type-1 and Type-2 diabetes have exhibited continuous and worrying increases in disease incidences in Europe¿s population. In parallel, from around 2000 onwards there has been an exponential increase in global research activity in understanding and designing new nanostructure materials. This workshop brought together leading scientists from the fields of diabetes, nanostructured biomaterials research, and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JRDF) with the Commission's Officers from Unit F2 and G3 of DG Research with responsibilities for health and nanotechnology in FP7.
The purpose of the workshop was to review: a) progress in FP6 research in both fields; b) research directions stimulated by the first calls of FP7 by Themes -1 (Health) and -4 (Nanosciences, Nanotechnologies, Material and New Production and c) how increased collaboration by scientists from both fields could be stimulated to provide better treatment options for sufferers of both diseases.
