Radiation quantities, units and measurements (RAD UNITS), Final report (summary)

Project ID: FIR1-CT-2000-20037
Funded under: FP5-EAECTP C

The core mission of the International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU) is to develop a coherent system of quantities and units that could be universally accepted in all fields where ionising radiations are used and in particular in medicine.
Radiation protection and effective use of radiation in medicine require the capability to accurately quantify the characteristics and magnitude of radiation exposure. This is essential for progress in the beneficial use of radiation in medical diagnostic and therapy and for the assessments of the potential health consequences and risks to the public and radiation workers.
The work carried out via this concerted action has addressed these needs.
