Novel Approaches in the Management of the Radiation Injury (NAIMORI), Final report (summary)

Project ID: FIGH-CT-2001-00157
Funded under: FP5-EAECTP C

Abstract

Improving the management of the radiation injury in victims exposed to high doses of radiation constitutes one of the key efforts that must be achieved by radiobiology experts specialised in cellular and molecular biology. Three main tissues determine the fate of irradiated victims: the haematopoietic, the epidermal and the vascular tissues. The response of the stem cells responsible for the repopulation of the haematopoietic and the epidermal tissues will determine the fate of the response of these two tissues. Additionally, the inflammatory response mediated by irradiated endothelial cells will interfere with the response of the haematopoietic and the epithelial cells, evidencing the necessity of investigating the response of all these tissues as a whole.
