DESCRIPTION OF TOPIC GALILEO-2007-1.7-01
Open Call for Focused Innovative Projects in Mass-Market GNSS Applications
The GNSS industry has entered the mass market era. The market of Personal Navigation Devices (PNDs) for instance is booming. With more than 13 million devices expected to be sold in 2007 in Western Europe alone, growth is over 40%. Consumer awareness is increasing and prices for decent systems have reached a mass market sweet spot of around EUR 200. GPS receivers, maps and navigation software keep getting better while more features like traffic information and music are piled onto the PND. Analysts expect the penetration in Europe of these devices to rise to 35-40% by 2012 from the current level of about 15%.
Such a booming market generates many opportunities for the European GNSS industry. However, as GNSS is an increasingly global market, it is vital that European companies continue to innovate in order to remain competitive and benefit from this market opportunity. Innovation is especially relevant for GNSS applications.
This topic is open only to SMEs, universities and research institutes. SME participation is an EU priority and a priority in FP7. In particular, FP7 aims to secure the appropriate involvement of SMEs through concrete measures and specific actions for their benefit. One of the FP7 targets is to allocate at least 15% of the EC funding in the 10 themes of the Cooperation Programme directly to SME participants.
In the context of GNSS applications, small projects carried out by SMEs have attracted significant interest. In FP6, 32 small scale projects have been carried out by SMEs and research institutes. The call led to a high proportion of newcomers and was highly appreciated by the participants.
