Seventh Framework Programme of the European Community for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration Activities (2007 to 2013) 'Cooperation' [...] DESCRIPTION OF TOPIC GALILEO-2007-1.1-01

Funded under: FP7-TRANSPORT

Abstract

Theme: Transport (including Aeronautics)
Sub-theme: Support to the European Global Navigation Satellite System (Galileo) and EGNOS
Activity: EXPLOITING THE FULL POTENTIAL
Area: MASS MARKET APPLICATIONS
DESCRIPTION OF TOPIC GALILEO-2007-1.1-01
Innovative GNSS-based Road Applications
The market of Personal Navigation Devices (PNDs) is booming. With more than 13 million devices expected to be sold in 2007 in Western Europe alone, growth is over 40%. Customer awareness is increasing and average selling prices have reached a mass market sweet spot of around EUR 200, while more features are being added. Analysts expect the penetration in Europe of these devices to rise to 35-40% by 2012 from the current level of about 15%.
This booming PND market is creating a platform for applications beyond navigation. This will result in more innovation and additional value creation opportunities, increasing the addressable market for Galileo and EGNOS. Of particular interest is road pricing which is expected to generate wide public benefits through the reduction of road congestion and pollution (a EU priority). Several Member States already have firm short-term plans to introduce nationwide road pricing. Other applications with high potential are: Pay-Per Use Insurance (PPU) and other so-called Value Added Services (VAS) like local mobility information (traffic, weather), entertainment (music, video), driving assistance, and accident data recording. These applications in turn may fund part of the cost of a road pricing system.
