ELME: European Lifestyles and Marine Ecosystems - the final phase

Project ID: 505576
Funded under: FP6-SUSTDEV

Europe's seas are larger than its land area but most EU citizens are unaware of the nature and importance of their marine environment - or the footprint of their own economic activities on the sea.European Lifestyles and Marine Ecosystems is a 15 -country EUR 2.5 million project that, for the first time, has studied the relationship between our lifestyles and the state of the marine environment. There are "winners" and "losers" resulting from human activity; the "winners" are often nuisance species or those of low economic value.Through a systematic and objective approach to modelling, we have examined scenarios of what the next 2-3 decades may hold for our seas. In some cases prospects are bright, but in others degradation will worsen unless we take urgent action to reduce our footprint.
