The European Commission, Directorate General XII, has provided a starting point for researchers wishing to find out what is being done to combat land degradation and desertification in the Mediterranean region. The report, "Actions taken by national governmental and non-governmental organisations to mitigate desertification in the Mediterranean: Environment and Climate Programme 1994-1998; Concerted Action Report 1", includes an introduction to the topic, outlining the problem, its causes and indicators, and briefly describes the current approaches available for reducing desertification. The report is then broken down into country-by-country summaries of actions taken to mitigate desertification, with descriptions of the work undertaken by both governmental and non-governmental organisations. The publishers plan to update the report regularly, as activities related to the International Convention to combat desertification are increasingly put into action.
