On-line database encourages contributions to cities' survival
The European Commission, DG XI, has recently launched a database on "Good Practice in Urban Management and Sustainability" for 1998 to 1999, at the address: URL: http://europa.eu.int/comm/urban(opens in new window) The database will be used to disseminate information about good practices and policy related to environmental, social, and economic sustainability in cities and towns. The system aims to raise awareness of actions leading to improved urban management. The database presents case studies in standard formats to make information collection and analysis easier. It also contains relevant Commission and other documents which provide background information on policy and practice. There are also links to other databases to allow integrated access to related information sources. The database covers a broad range of cases of good practice and urban pilot projects in urban management and sustainability, including: - Urban environment and quality of life; - Governance and local agenda 21 processes; - Integrated urban management; - Job creation and urban regeneration; - Social inclusion and equality; - Cities and regional development. The database is targeted at a wide audience, including EU institutions, local regional and national authorities, associations and networks, business and industry, and educational and research institutes. The Commission is encouraging contributions to the database which can be submitted on-line via the website or by contacting the project manager.
