Centre of excellence tackles contaminated land reclamation
The School of Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of Greenwich, is launching a Centre for Contaminated Land Remediation, the first of its kind in the UK to be a centre of excellence in the study of the remediation of former industrial sites. The Centre integrates research from diverse disciplines: from remedial technologies and monitoring issues to risk analysis, policy issues and real estate valuation. The Centre is sponsored by several of the most important trade associations and engineering companies concerned with contaminated land issues. The Centre is the brainchild of Professor Alistair Baxter, Professor of Geology at the University. "The School of Earth & Environmental Sciences is exceptionally well-equipped with analytical equipment, and has long history of research strength in this area, particularly in the fields of pollution science, environmental geochemistry and bioremediation, having earned over £500,000 of Research Council and European Union research grants over the past year," he explained. The Centre will be housed in state-of-the-art laboratories at the University's Medway Campus, itself situated in an urban regeneration zone.
